Production managers are under pressure like never before. In 2026, you’re expected to hit ambitious output targets, keep costs down, roll out new tech, protect against cyber threats, and still have a motivated, safety-minded workforce. No big deal, right? Here are 10 of the biggest challenges production managers will face in 2026—and what they actually mean on the shop floor.

1. Closing the Skills Gap

The skilled labour crunch isn’t letting up. Manufacturers around the world are struggling to find experienced operators, technicians, and maintenance staff as older workers retire and fewer young people enter trades. Surveys show talent shortages are still cited as a top manufacturing challenge, with skill gaps driving up labour costs and limiting capacity.
