  4. Pull: Implement a pull system in which actual customer demand determines production rather than forecasting. This approach reduces overproduction, one of the primary forms of waste in manufacturing.
  5. Perfection: Continuously strive for perfection by relentlessly pursuing the elimination of waste and optimizing processes. This principle is about fostering a culture of continuous improvement (often called "Kaizen").

Types of Waste in Lean Manufacturing

Lean Manufacturing identifies seven types of waste, often referred to as "TIMWOOD":

  1. Transport: Unnecessary movement of products or materials between processes.
  2. Inventory: Excess raw materials, work in progress, or finished products that are not being processed and taking up space.
  3. Motion: Unnecessary movements by people (e.g., reaching, bending).
  4. Waiting: Idle time waiting for the next production step.
  5. Overproduction: Producing more than is needed or before it is needed.
  6. Overprocessing: Performing more work or using more resources than necessary.
  7. Defects: Efforts involved in inspecting and fixing defects.
An eighth waste, "Skills" (underutilization of employees' talents and skills), is often included in modern lean practices.

  1. 5S: The 5S stands for Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. It is a workplace organization method that aims to create a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
  2. Kanban: A scheduling system that uses visual signals (often cards or swimlanes) to control the flow of materials and production in a pull system.
  3. Kaizen: A philosophy of continuous improvement where small, incremental changes are made regularly to improve processes and eliminate waste.
  4. Value Stream Mapping (VSM): A diagrammatic depiction of the flow of materials and information in the production process, helping to identify and eliminate waste.
  5. Just-In-Time (JIT): A production and inventory management strategy that aims to reduce on-hand inventory and associated carrying costs by holding or producing only what is needed when it is required.
  6. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM): A proactive maintenance approach that involves all employees in maintaining equipment to prevent breakdowns and maximize productivity.
  7. Poka-Yoke: A mistake-proofing technique designed to prevent errors or defects in the manufacturing process.
  8. Heijunka: A production leveling strategy that smooths out the production schedule to avoid peaks and troughs in production volume.
